Shrove Tuesday Means “Black Orpheus” To Me!

I post this every year – because I can and also because I get a chance to tout a favorite movie from back in the day: “Black Orpheus”

I cannot think of Mardi Gras, Carnival or Shrove Tuesday (February 28th this year) without having this terrific movie samba- ing across my mind.

“Black Orpheus”, 1959, by French director Marcel Camus is the classic Greek romantic tragedy, transplanted to Brazil, of Orpheus (Breno Mello) and Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) set against the back drop of a high energy, high drama, dance troupe.

The costumes, the music of Rio de Janeiro, the dancing, and all those pretty people being chased by a man in a skeleton mask – fabulous.

Even if you haven’t seen this film, you are probably familiar with its great music by Antonio Carlos Jobim, including “Manhã de Carnaval” (written by Luiz Bonfá).

So, if you can’t get to a Mardi Gras near you,  get the “Black Orpheus” DVD, put on some feathers and sequins, throw some beads out the window to people and enjoy!

FYI – Per WikiPedia: “Black Orpheus won the Palme d’Or prize at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival as well as the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1960 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.”

Sun into Dreamy Pisces 2/18/17!

The Sun moves into the 12th and final sign of the Zodiac– imaginative, impressionable, intuitive Pisces on Saturday, February 18, 2017. It’s a compassionate Water sign ruled by outer planet Neptune. If too much “feeling” sends you off course, focus on the tasks in front of you to stay grounded and connected to reality. Over sensitivity to adverse energy or vibrations is no excuse to drift or evade life. Stay steady, stay productive, stay connected.

Mystical Neptune, transiting Pisces until 2025, has a reputation for clouding the waters, fading boundaries and fostering escapism, but, all these things that make life unsettled can also enhance creativity and imagination. Innovations regarding music, dance and theater will probably bubble to the surface faster than usual. The subconscious can be a treasure trove of ideas now. Keep paper and pencil handy, jot down your dreams. Listen to your inner voice – the positive one.

Sun into Pisces:  Feb. 18, 2017 – 6:32 PM PST / 3:32 PM EST

* Gemstone: Amethyst * Power color: Purple * Body Part: Feet

Happy Valentine’s Day! Who’s Your Sun Sign Match?

hearts-Valentine’s Day, Tuesday February 14, 2017, isn’t just about flowers and candy. Its also about acknowledging delightful partnerships, a special someone, a match. Remember that after work party, bar pick up line from  years ago – “Hey, what’s your sign?”. It didn’t always result in a “you complete me” hookup, but,  it’s a great question if looking for “interesting” company. Astrology signs are grouped from Aries to Pisces – all 12 have a partner. Does it mean that the sign opposite yours is your “soul mate” – not necessarily, but, there may be undeniable heat, attraction and fun.

Astro Pairs 2

Sun Signs are listed below with their direct opposites in the Zodiac. Either you will find spending time with the other sign tangy and energizing or the relationship may need compromise and patience, but, generally, consider them the other side of your coin, another piece of the “couple” puzzle:

Aries: March 21-April 19 (Energetic, Impulsive) and

Libra: Sept 23-Oct 22 (Charming, Social)

*

Taurus: April 20-May 21 (Solid, Responsible, Patient) and

Scorpio: Oct 23-Nov 21 (Intense, Deep Connections)

 *

Gemini: May 22-June 20 (Logical, Communicative, Versatile) and

Sagittarius: Nov 22-Dec 21 (Adventurous, Enthusiastic, Optimistic)

 *

Cancer: June 21-July 22 (Family Oriented, Emotional) and

Capricorn: Dec 22-Jan 19 (Traditional, Disciplined, Ambitious)

*

Leo: July 23- Aug 22 (Pride, Fun Loving, Generous) and

Aquarius: Jan 20-Feb 18 (Unpredictable, Freedom loving)

*

Virgo: Aug 23-Sept 22 (Its All in the Details, Service) and

Pisces: Feb 19-March 20: (Dreamer, Sensitive)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

May there be lots of XOXOs for you & your partner, regardless of Sun Sign.

My “Disclaimer”  🙂

Of course there are other factors that create great couples,

But, I thought I would give romance an Astrological slant.

Chance To Shine – Vibrant Leo Full Moon 2/10/17

A dramatic, fun, open and generous Leo Moon on Friday February 10, 2017 sets the tone for any potential weekend festivities.  Exciting “look at me” melodrama is always possible with the fiery 5th sign of the Zodiac and since the Lunar orb is also in its “Full” phase, lit by its opposite Sun in Aquarius, fireworks are possible. So take that spotlight if you want it, wear some regal purple, be royally magnanimous to your subjects (friends and family) and have a great time.

Leo wants us to be active, upbeat and regally charming as we use the Full Moon energy to wrap things up and bring projects to completion. This will last for about 10 days even as the Moon moves into the next sign of practical Virgo.

Enjoy the weekend!

Leo Full Moon: February 10, 2017 – 7:33 PM EST / 4:33 PM PST

Aquarius Sun 1/19/17 – Freedom, Revolution, Surprise!

The Sun entered unpredictable, freedom loving Aquarius on Thursday January 19, 2017. Other people and their causes are a natural concern for the 11th sign of the Zodiac. There may be urges to join a rally, organize a march and / or form a protest for any issues deemed important by friends, neighborhood groups, etc. Note the strong desire to contribute to the universe in some way. Regardless of your birthday, we can all tap into those vibrations as the Sun intensifies this Air sign’s influences. (It is about “We/Us” rather than “I/Me.)

On 2/7 Mercury will add its cleverness, communication and networking expertise when transiting inventive Aquarius until 2/26/17. Temper any tendencies towards sarcasm and sharpness. (Sugar better than vinegar) Be clear in speech and written word when rallying your comrades.

Don’t be surprised. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of sudden changes and unexpected events. Taking risks, being on the edge, or ledge – sounds intense, but it can be done with humor. If you’re going to spend time enrolling people into saving the world, you might as well have fun doing it.

*Sun into Aquarius: January 19, 2017 = 4:24 PM EST / 1:24 PM PST

*Gemstone: Blue Tiger’s Eye *Power color: Ultramarine blue * Body Part: Ankles

BTW: don’t get confused – even though the Astrology symbol is the “Water Bearer”, Aquarius is an Air sign!

Gemstones & Colors By Astrology Sign!

Sun Signs & The Body Parts They Rule

Astro Body Parts 2Our Zodiac Sun Signs have their colors, their birth stones and their personality traits. According to traditional Astrology, they also have jurisdiction over particular parts of our anatomy:

Aries:  Head / Face (“Head strong”)

Taurus:  Neck (A sore throat can really be a problem for a truth talking Bull)

Gemini:   Hands, arms (“Twins” people talk with their hands a lot)

Cancer:  Breasts (Of course the nurturer)

Leo:  Heart (…of a lion!)

Virgo:  Bowels (Cleansing the system for good health)

Libra:  Kidneys (Balancing the body fluids)

Scorpio:  Reproductive system (No more needs to be said)

Sagittarius:  Hips, liver (Sag’s symbol is always a centaur with a wine pouch?)

Capricorn:  Skeletal structure (bones, bones, bones…)

Aquarius: Legs (Support for all those spontaneous moves)

Pisces:  Feet (Pedicures are a good thing)

The ancients thought that those parts of the body ruled by your Sun Sign were particularly sensitive and vulnerable.  Perhaps. But I do think we need to take care of them regardless and listen when they speak and tell us something is out of whack.

Treat our parts well, and they will be kind to us in return.

Planets * Spark Plugs of the Astrology Chart!

Astro Planet ImagesI call them the “Big 10”. Yes, there are only 8 “planets” (I still keep Pluto on the list even though it was reclassified as a “dwarf” in 2006), but the 2 luminaries – Sun and Moon – are always included when discussing Astrology.

Planets are the spark plugs in an Astrology chart. They each have a job to do as they energize the many facets of an individual’s personality and life. In addition, a planet is said to have “rulership” of a particular sign (it will be at its happiest and most potent energy when transiting there – fully expressed).

The Planets are listed below along with their Zodiac sign rulerships and duties:

Sun * Leo: Life force, self expression

Moon * Cancer: Emotions, sub conscious, nurturing

Mercury * Gemini and Virgo: Communication (when Mercury goes retrograde, we need to watch what we say and write), transportation, education

Venus * Taurus and Libra: Love, beauty and how we view/value ourselves and money

Mars * Aries: Action, conflict, sexuality

Jupiter * Sagittarius: Expansion, recreation, philosophy

Saturn * Capricorn:  Discipline, boundaries, authority

Uranus * Aquarius: Change, the unconventional, extremes

Neptune * Pisces: Spirituality, dreams, illusion

Pluto * Scorpio: Unconscious, breaking down and rebuilding, secrets

The location of a planet in a birth chart – its House placement, its Astrology Sign – can influence how we act/respond in particular areas of our lives as they currently transit and move around our chart today.

What’s My Sign????

Astro rainbow-horoscope-wheel-char

There may be some people that get confused about their Astrology birth sign because they were born on the Cusp of 2 Sun signs:

Aries: March 21-April 19

Taurus: April 20-May 21

Gemini: May 22-June 20

Cancer: June 21-July 22

Leo: July 23- Aug 22

Virgo: Aug 23-Sept 22

Libra: Sept 23-Oct 22

Scorpio: Oct 23-Nov 21

Sagittarius Nov 22-Dec 21

Capricorn: Dec 22-Jan 19

Aquarius: Jan 20-Feb 18

Pisces: Feb 19-March 20

I call them “Cusp Babies”. They get annoyed- not when I call them that, but because the start / end dates of a Sun Sign’s duration “calendar travels” from year to year.

Depending on location, year and month you were born in the world, the Astrological sign changeover can be anywhere from the 18th to the 23rd of the month.

Example: the Sun entered Aquarius on Friday January 20, 2012 (11:10 am EST/ 8:10 am PST). If a child was born earlier than 8:10 in the morning in Los Angeles on 1/20/12 – the Sun was in the previous sign of Capricorn. If born later – the baby has an Aquarius Sun (of course the clock varies by Time Zone, but you get the drift).

Regardless of when you were born, you have a Sun Sign. If you were born on a cusp day, you just need to have complete birth info – specific time/place/date- to really nail down your sign.

You’ve determined your Sun Sign, but what about the other sign that is so close its only separated by minutes/hours?  Depending on where planets show up and/or congregate in a chart, the individual will often have characteristics of sign # 2 as well. As in life, in astrology no one is one dimensional. (You can read information about both signs just to give yourself a rounded feeling)

The Sun Sign is the light reflecting the self.  How we behave when our backs are to the wall, pressed, fight or flight situations, etc. As complex people, we radiate several lights – perhaps just not all at the same time.

BTW: The Earth’s rotation actually determines the start dates of a sign – not the Sun. The dates can vary by as much as 2 days depending on when a leap year occurs.

As the world turns, the Sun appears to flow from one Zodiac sign to another. Since the Earth wobbles, it takes slightly more than 365 days — actually 365 + 1/4 days. Because of this, our calendars must be adjusted to compensate for this difference.\\

The Scorpio Sun arrives on Saturday October 23rd (8:35AM EDT/ 5:35AM PDT

Happy New Year!

I am happy and grateful, while eating chocolate ice cream, to be able to wish the best of everything to everyone. Stay safe, stay grounded.
